Donation bins make giving simple. A donor can drop off clothing, shoes, household goods, or other needed items at a convenient location without having to coordinate with a staffed facility. For nonprofit organizations, these bins can extend their reach, increase collection capacity, and help keep reusable materials in circulation.
But every additional bin also becomes another remote location that must be managed.
Is it nearly full? Does it need to be collected today—or could that trip wait? Has the container been knocked over, moved, or damaged? Is an unusual rise in temperature creating a potential safety concern?
Without remote visibility, donation centers often have to answer these questions through fixed collection schedules, phone calls from property managers, or in-person inspections. That can lead to unnecessary trips to half-empty bins, delayed pickups from high-volume locations, overflowing donations, and slower responses to safety or vandalism concerns.

Donation Collection Has an Important Role in the Circular Economy
The need for more effective textile collection and reuse is significant. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generated approximately 17 million tons of textile waste in 2018—equal to 5.8% of all municipal solid waste generated that year. Only 14.7% of those textiles were recycled, while landfills received approximately 11.3 million tons.
More recent federal analysis shows that this is not a short-term problem. In a December 2024 report, the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported that EPA estimates indicate textile waste increased by more than 50% between 2000 and 2018. The GAO also identified limited, decentralized collection and sorting systems as one of the factors complicating textile recovery in the United States.
Donation bins help address that collection gap by making reuse more accessible. Clothing and other goods that might otherwise enter the waste stream can instead be collected, sorted, resold, recycled, or distributed to people in need. This aligns with the EPA’s waste-management hierarchy, which prioritizes source reduction and reuse above recycling, energy recovery, and disposal.
However, the value of a donation-bin network depends on how reliably that network can be operated. A full bin that can no longer accept donations represents missed collection opportunities. An overflowing or damaged bin can create an unsightly property condition and undermine community trust. Sending a vehicle to check a bin that is only partially full, meanwhile, consumes staff time, fuel, and vehicle capacity that could be used elsewhere.
That is where remote monitoring can make a measurable operational difference.

Fall: Respond When a Bin Tips or Its Position ChangesDonation bins are frequently placed outdoors in parking lots and other publicly accessible areas. That makes them vulnerable to severe weather, accidental impact, vandalism, unauthorized movement, or improper handling. A fall or tipping alert can give operations teams an early warning that a container may no longer be upright. Instead of waiting for a donor, property manager, or passerby to report the problem, the organization can investigate promptly. Faster awareness can help:

Fire: Add an Early Warning for Abnormal Heat ConditionsDonation bins may contain textiles, paper, cardboard, and other combustible materials. They may also receive prohibited or inappropriate items despite posted instructions. An unexpected temperature increase can therefore be an important condition to investigate quickly. Our sensors can detect potential fire conditions and transmit an alert through the connected monitoring system. This can give designated personnel an opportunity to assess the situation and initiate the organization’s response procedures sooner. From Sensor to Complete Monitoring Solution
A successful IoT deployment requires more than selecting a sensor. The complete solution may include mounting, connectivity, LoRaWAN gateways or network coverage, device provisioning, alert rules, dashboards, data integration, and an ongoing maintenance plan.
