Description
The Semtech AirLink XR80 Gen2 + WiFi (MPN 1105213) is a high-performance, rugged 5G cellular router designed for critical mobile and fixed applications, such as in vehicles and demanding industrial environments. As a Generation 2 router, it leverages the latest 5G technology, offering exceptional theoretical peak speeds of up to 4.5 Gbps downlink and 900 Mbps uplink. This robust performance is critical for applications requiring massive data throughput and low latency. The XR80 is engineered with expandability in mind, featuring a cartridge-based design that ensures long-term upgradability and future-proofing for evolving network technologies. It integrates seamlessly into existing infrastructure with features like dual SIM support (Mini-2FF) for carrier redundancy and flexibility. The physical interfaces are extensive, including multiple Ethernet ports—specifically, one 5 Gigabit Ethernet port and either two or three 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports, depending on the configuration. It also includes dual RS-232 serial ports (DB-9 connector) and 5 GPIOs for digital I/O, making it highly versatile for connecting to various industrial and vehicular systems.
Beyond its cellular capabilities, this specific variant includes Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) functionality, featuring a powerful 5×4 MU MIMO antenna configuration that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. The Wi-Fi segment offers a theoretical peak throughput of 2400 Mbps and can support up to 256 clients, secured by WPA2/WPA3 Personal/Enterprise protocols. The XR80 incorporates a 48-Channel GNSS receiver with Dead Reckoning, essential for reliable location tracking in challenging environments where GPS signals might be intermittent. The router is built to withstand extreme conditions, complying with MIL-STD-810G standards for shock and vibration, and boasts an IP64 rating for dust and water ingress protection, housed in a sealed aluminum casing. Its operating temperature range is -30°C to +70°C, and its power system supports a wide input voltage range of 7 to 36 VDC, with built-in protection against voltage transients and load dumps, including Ignition Sense for vehicle installations.
Management and security are handled through the AirLink OS and AirLink Management Service (ALMS), which facilitates device-to-cloud security and provides Out-of-Band Management capabilities. This centralized management helps reduce the total cost of ownership by simplifying maintenance and offering comprehensive control over deployed units. Certifications for the XR80 include FCC, IC/ISED, PTCRB, and carrier approvals from major North American providers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, with public safety certifications like FirstNet® Capable, reinforcing its suitability for mission-critical communications. The high reliability of the hardware is demonstrated by a calculated MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) of approximately 21.3 years for the WiFi variant, based on Telcordia SR-332 standards.
